Japanese and Korean banks test yen stablecoin for tourist spending between countries
Shinhan Bank and SBI Group are running a pilot program using a stablecoin pegged to the Japanese yen to simplify how tourists spend money when traveling between Japan and South Korea. A stablecoin pegged to yen would hold a stable value equal to yen, making it easier to use across borders. Instead of tourists needing to exchange currency at poor rates or carry multiple payment methods, they could use this stablecoin for seamless cross-border spending. This pilot represents one of the first major real-world use cases for government-backed currencies on blockchain. The test could prove that digital versions of traditional money solve real problems for everyday people. If successful, it could inspire central banks worldwide to develop their own digital currency systems.
Zašto je bitno
When major banks test blockchain technology for practical applications like travel payments, it shows crypto is becoming integrated into mainstream finance. This could make international travel easier and cheaper for regular people.
